Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Max Factory Figmas Review

image
Among the figures that I own, this set of figures is one of my favourites. They’re vibrant, colourful and true to the show with lots of accessories and tons of fun to be had! Setting up scenes from the show/films along with creating ones of your own is always enjoyable. I’ll go into detail about each of the figures, as well as show off their accessories. Glamour shots of the figures is also ahead!
Feel free to use this as a guide when purchasing your own Madoka Magica figmas online. Be careful of fraudulent China made figures! If the price seems too good to be true it probably is! Go to websites like AmiAmi or Hobby Search and check out their boxes in detail so you know what to look for when buying off of non-hobby sites like Amazon or Ebay. I’ve purchased fraudulent and legitimate figures off of Ebay so you have to be careful when purchasing off those sites.

Kaname Madoka

image
Madoka’s figma is pinky pink making her one of the cutest figures of the set for sure. Her dress is very well detailed, with each bow and ribbon looking perfect and plush on her dress even though they’re plastic. She is very flexible despite that big skirt so you can put her into any action position. She comes with a sitting Kyubey, a closed and open bow as well as 4 arrows for it. She comes with 2 Grief Seeds and 2 other faces (scared and determined). She’s a smaller figure along with the others in the series, they all stand at about 11.5 cm (4.5 in).
image
One thing to be careful with are those small accessories! Kyubey’s ear rings are detachable, and those Grief Seeds are super tiny. Be careful when playing with these because losing an item is always heartbreaking and to get a replacement piece you’d have to replace the whole figure (they do not sell accessories separately). One gripe is that Kyubey is a little top heavy and never seems to sit without some struggle. Otherwise this is a fantastic figure.
image
Here are all accessories (not shown is the stand). Every figma figure comes with a ziplock bag for all the accessories, however if you’re collecting like I am then keeping the box is a must. The box however is nothing exciting to look at (sorry I did not take photos of the box). If you keep the box everything fits nicely inside; personally I suggest keeping the box.
image
This figure is an 8.0 out of 10 in my opinion. It loses points because of the lack of a Soul Gem (all these figmas don’t have one) as well as being a bit underwhelming in terms of accessories. Later in this post I review the Ultimate Madoka figure which also includes the same open bow with slightly different arrows. Why have the same accessories? Give us a second Charlotte form or other witches for our enjoyment. Just a personal disappointment but anywho, onto the next figure!

Sayaka Miki

image
Sayaka’s figure is really neat in comparison to Madoka’s. She’s a fighter so included with her are 8 swords, sword stands, a soft and plastic cape, 2 alternate faces (happy and laughing) and a stand (not shown). Her outfit looks stellar, the detail is awesome. Her body is pvc plastic (as is all the others) so there is a lot of flexibility when it comes to posing her.
image
Now something that had me a little puzzled when I received the figure was the inclusion of the flowing plastic cape. From an objective standpoint it seems to be a nice addition, but once I started posing her I didn’t seem to understand exactly why it was necessary. The soft cape she comes with has wire on both edges to allow for posing it as you wish. I can make it big and flowing if I want to so why would I need the large plastic cape at all?
One more thing to be careful with when posing Sayaka is the sleeves of her gloves are not attached to the figure. I don’t understand the consistency with these figures when Madoka’s sleeves were attached, but Sayaka’s are not. Anyway, this is a piece that is very easy to lose. I wish they didn’t design the figure that way, but they did, so be aware!
image
I do however love those swords! They should’ve ditched the cape and gave her more swords. Or perhaps even a little figure of her in witch form would’ve been nice. Anything but that cape, I’ve barely used it! It would’ve been neat if she came with the face she makes as she’s going crazy too instead of one of the others (her school uniform version doesn’t include one).
image
All in all I give Sayaka’s figma an 8.3 out of 10. There was a little lost potential with the cape, but the amount of swords almost makes up for it. Her figure is quite beautiful just like her design in the show. I can’t be all that upset with the figure even if I tried!

Mami Tomoe

image

Her figure was the second one released (after Homura’s figma). Her accessories along with Sakura and Homura are among the most interesting. Tons of guns to display make for a really nice centerpiece, and her figure looks awesome too!
image
She comes with only 6 guns (sadly not 8 like Sayaka’s swords), 6 stands for those guns, a little Charlotte, a stand for Charlotte, a small flower that can replace her hat, as well as 2 additional faces (winking and happy) and a stand (not shown). Charlotte alone makes this figure worth getting, but I’m so happy they included her with Mami. It seems sort of irrelevant to pose these figures when they have nothing that they’re fighting, so having Charlotte makes this a must buy for the set.
image
Mami’s figure comes with trigger fingers for both hands so she can duel wield as well as having 4 guns on standby. Her faces are nice choices so you have plenty of options when posing Mami. I couldn’t be happier with all the decisions they made on this figure. Her dress looks awesome, and the detailing on the hands for her gloves is precise and nicely detailed. Every detail is perfect, right down to the pinstriping on her tights. Even Charlotte is heavily detailed, it’s just awesome.
image
I’m giving Mami’s figure a 9.0 out of 10. Her guns are awesome, Charlotte is awesome, and Mami’s scared expression just makes it worth buying (if Charlotte isn’t enough). My complaint about this figure? Well it could always use more guns, or a Tiro Finale giant gun, but I know that’s a silly complaint. Buy this figure. She’s my least favourite character from the show, but one of my favourite figures to pose. You’ll understand why if you pick one up for yourself!

Akemi Homura

image
Homura’s figma outshines the others by a longshot. Just look at that Bazooka! She was badass in the show, and her figure encapsulates that perfectly. Her hair is customizable, it can be blowing in the wind or slightly blowing in the wind (her hair is never not blowing in the wind) and she is the only figure of the set with the most variety in accessories. Just awesomeness all around!
image
Her accessories include glasses, a gun, a bomb, a bazooka, a golf club, her time plate, pigtailed hair, 2 additional faces (passive and happy) and a stand (not shown). Her left hand is nicely detailed with her soul gem, plus the detail overall on her is really nice. She has the plainest outfit of all the characters but what she lacks in vibrance she makes up for in customizability.
image
I really like that they included heir pigtails and glasses because this makes her very versatile. This allows her to imitate nearly any scene from the show/films that you’d want. Along with her plethora of accessories you get a figure that has a lot of options, and many figures such as Sayaka come with trigger fingers that can use Homura’s gun, so  your imagination is the limit. I really like her stern face for posing because it’s just so Homura they have her personality well imitated in this figure.
image
I have to give Homura’s figure a 9.8 out of 10. It’s nearly perfect, my only nit picking would be that included with the time plate be an open time plate, but that’s not a big deal. This figure definitely delivers for anyone who is a fan of the character. If you loved her in the story you’ll love this figure.

Kyoko Sakura

image
Another one of my favourite characters from the show/film is Sakura. Her devilish grin is just as awesome in mini form, so let’s get down to the other mini details. Another figure that I love and hate (I’ll get shortly into why I dislike it) but for now let’s focus on the positives. She’s got tons of accessories and two forms for her weapon. What more could you ask for?
image
Her accessories include staff, spear head, 6 spear links, 7 spear chains (including bottom chain), 2 pocky, a pocky box in hand, a fish cookie in hand, a dangling Kyubey, 2 additional faces (happy and angry) and stand (not shown). What stands out besides the customizable weapon is of course, the dangling Kyubey. He’s pretty awesome and nicely detailed but so difficult to use! I’ve busted a few blood vessels trying to get him to stay. He’s like a dog that doesn’t obey, it’s very annoying.
image
The image in the instructions makes it look easy, but once you get that hand on his ear if you even tap him or look at him wrong he falls. It almost makes him unusable. Very frustrating! Also be careful of the tiny rings on his ear, they are not glued in so if you fiddle with him too much they fall off. This just adds a whole new difficulty level to putting the hand on with his ear rings constantly falling off. Just be careful when posing Sakura with him, most of the time it’s an uphill battle.
image
All that said however, Kyoko’s accessories are pretty fun. Be really careful with the small pocky and tiny chains. I hate small parts and the fact is it’s already a small figure, so the accessories are tiny! Be warned if you’re collecting. Other than that her figure is very fun the pose. There’s lots of options with the food, the weapons, her skirt has joints so you can position them how you like as well as her hair. There was a lot of attention given to her figure. She looks really cool in pretty much any pose you put her in.
Overall this figure gets an 8.5 out of 10. She loses a lot of points because of the Kyubey frustration and small accessories, if it wasn’t for that this figure would be perfect. If you own a Sayaka Miki figma this figma is a must to match up in action poses with her.

Ultimate Madoka

image
This figure is gorgeous. Its detail, size and beauty blow all of the other figures out of the water. That’s natural though of course, because Ultimate Madoka’s design is already fantastic. This figure does not disappoint as it is true to the anime’s design plus added shimmer and sparkle. The outfit she wears has a shimmery glossy gleam to it with a sparkly under skirt that looks like the night sky. This is a center piece figure if I’ve ever seen one.
image

The box is also shimmery as you can see. Every figma box comes with a punch out for display (I leave them in for collecting purposes). But if you’re interested, her display looks really cool (it is the cardboard pull out that is shown above, inside the box). Also, when I received this in the mail I was blown away by how much care they put into the presentation of the box with the figure inside. All the others have relatively boring boxes whereas this one stands out. So if you display your boxes this is a nice one to have!
image
The size of this figure is huge, mostly width-wise as her dress billows on all sides and her wings and hair jut out a lot. Her stand is very sturdy and holds her weight up well. Her stand holds her up at her base so you won’t run into any problems displaying her despite the huge dress. Every detail was thought out nicely.
image
She comes with an open bow, 4 arrows (2 with exploding ends), an alternate determined face and stand (not shown). She lacks accessories so her displaying is a bit limited. I think she displays best with a happy Homura figma. I can’t complain too much about the accessories because of how nice the figure is despite it. She commands attention so accessories aren’t all that necessary. Like I mentioned earlier, because her accessories mimic that of the regular Madoka, it’s a shame that her regular form didn’t offer more variety. In this case though, the accessories make sense and they’re nice to have. Her dress has multiple joints for billow effect, as well as her hair. She’s a bit limited for posing because her dress is so massive, but it’s not enough to make it a struggle.
image
I believe this figma deserves a 10 out of 10. It hits all the notes that you’d want in a figure. It’s gorgeous, attention grabbing, poseable and a lot of fun to display.
I suggest if you’re a collector of figures, or like the show and want a bit more that you check out getting these figures. They’re a lot of fun and there’s endless possibilities. They also have a line of figmas for these girls out of their magical forms so check those out too if you’re curious! Figmas by Good Smile Company are definitely higher quality figures for the money so for anyone who’s curious about the figma line should check out the company. They’ve done figmas for animes as well as for video games, such as a Metroid Other M and Zelda:Skyward Sword. Check out Good Smile here.
Thanks for reading, I hope this review helps you in your figure purchases!
